This can make your movie library storage and backup woes history. The new technology of Micro-Holographic disc's promises to store upto 500GB of data on a single disc making it almost unbeatable in terms of storage capacity.
The disc unveiled by GE ( General Electric) concentrates on volume storage rather than surface storage ( I do not understand the former very well!!). Normal CD's and DVD's store the information on the surface of the disc via a set of 0's and 1's that get etched over its surface ( etched by use of a Lazer that changes the dye properties creating what are known as pits). Using the presence and absense of pits, which can be determined by a lens - lazer beam combination (based on the refected light into the lens) the CD-Rom drive is able to read the data on the disc.
GE believes that the technology will take a few years before it really can come as a off-the-shelf product. However, when it does i am sure it will change the way we store our data.
